Pregnancy has a way of telling the truth, not just about the baseline health of our bodies, but about the health of the information we were handed when it came time to choose.
This is not the Instagram truth. It is not the good patient truth. It is the cellular truth, living in your own particular body, shaped by your own particular life.
Across cultures and lineages and living rooms, people have always reached for what they know: tradition, ancestry, faith, science, the wisdom earned by simply having lived. There has never been one story about how to carry a pregnancy well. There is only your context, singular and unrepeatable.
Ova Sanctum starts there, with initial lab work that tells us where you are starting your pregnancy, and exactly where your body could use more specific support.
Here's what we're not doing: handing you a prescription, or pretending we know your life better than you do. What we are doing is research, applying clinical experience, and careful listening, gathered up and put directly in your hands so you can decide what's actually aligned with your body, your values, your circumstances.
Information in service of your sovereignty. That's it. That's the whole philosophy.
I'm giving you the research so you can choose something that fits your budget, supports your baby's development, and protects your own reserves, because you matter too, not just as a vessel getting this baby to term.
Your body will prioritize that baby. Every time. It doesn't know how to do otherwise. Your job is making sure there's enough nourishment that it never has to take it from you.
We don't want your teeth falling out. I'm not being dramatic; that's real, that happens. And it's just one line item on a much longer list of what malnourishment costs you later. Let’s stop it now.
Your body is the source of nutrients of all kinds. Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fats, Minerals, Water, and others will all be pulled from your body to support the expansion of your blood volume, build bones and organs, grow a brain, and wire a nervous system. You will do all of this work in a society that asks women to give so much more than they are receiving. Prenatal vitamins, along with eating real food, are among the simplest ways to support the body while it does this extraordinary work.
For decades, pregnancy supplementation focused almost entirely on iron and folic acid. That mattered, and still does, but current research is clear: it is just not enough¹.
What the Research Keeps Pointing To
Below are the seven nutrients that show up, study after study, actively shaping the journey of pregnancy. Call them the seven essentials of pregnancy supplementation.
Folate³ — builds healthy neural pathways in early development.
Iron³ — powers expanding blood volume and oxygen delivery.
Vitamin D⁴ — strengthens bones and immunity, supports the placenta.
Iodine³ — supports thyroid hormones and growing brains.
Zinc and Selenium³ — protect immune and cellular function.
DHA (omega-3 fatty acid)⁵ — fuels the developing brain and eyesight.
Choline⁶ — nourishes fetal brain growth (and it's the one most often left off the label).
Here's the part that should give you pause: long-term child health studies have found that many commonly used prenatal vitamins don't provide optimal amounts of these nutrients, especially vitamin D, choline, calcium, and DHA⁴.
That gap can leave a baby short on the building blocks for healthy bones and memory.
Which means this was never about doing everything.
It's about not missing the basics.
